Hitting Mykonos Beaches with the Kids
You may have heard that Mykonos’ beaches can turn pretty wild. And, yes, for adults looking for all-night partying, this is true. But don’t worry, there are some beautiful beaches that are family-friendly. Here are a couple of sandy spots that you can take your kids to without worrying about crazy crowds:
Kalafatis
Kalafatis is located right on the coast of this island. Compared to some of the other beaches on the island, it is relatively quiet and serene. Even though it is quiet, however, there are still plenty of things to do for the kids.
Kalafatis is lined with beach umbrellas and benches, so you can go and relax without the worry of having to lug several chairs and blankets with you. We all know how stressful traveling with kids can sometimes be, so this beach lets you pack a little lighter, making the trip just a bit easier.
This beach is also home to some of the best watersports spots. From snorkeling to surfing to diving, you and your kids are sure to have a ton of fun enjoying the water. You can even rent your own boards right on the beach.
If all of that isn’t enough for you and you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can also jet ski and windsurf in the ocean right in front of the beach. You can find huts throughout the beach where you can rent boards and jet skis.
Kalafatis is also a great place to visit if you need a break from both the kids and the business of the island. Quiet, but not isolated, this beach can offer you a quick escape for yourself for a couple of hours.
Platis Gialos
Platis Gialos is another great kid-friendly beach that you can find on the island of Mykonos. Unlike some of the other beaches, Platis Gialos is lined with hotels, shops, and even cafes.
The waters here are also pretty shallow, so it’s great for younger kids. You could bring your own, but this beach is also lined with sunbeds and umbrellas for you and your family.
This beach also has tons of opportunities for watersports, with huts around the island for rentals. If you wanted to explore other beaches around the island, you could also set sail on a boat that departs from Platis Gialos every hour.
Take a Family Boat Trip in Mykonos
If you wanted to explore something a little off the shore, Mykonos has a few day-trip cruises. You can take a trip on a luxury boat that will take you around the surrounding islands. You can book a cruise or even a catamaran.
When you’re in Greece with the gorgeous and clear oceans, how can you pass up on a chance to sail those waters?
Catamarans are famous for their glass floors so that you and your kids can see everything below you in the crystal-clear ocean. The kids will go wild over this. Most of the people who visit Mykonos with kids prefer to take their boat trips of a catamaran anyway because it’s a more private and less party-kind of a ride.
Set Sail in Mykonos as a Family
If bigger ships aren’t your family’s thing, then you can still take a boat rides around the waters of the island. In Mykonos, you can rent sailboats for you and your family, or you can even take a private tour.
There are a few ports around the island where you can rent a sailboat, as long as you know how to sail. If you don’t, however, you can find a few places which offer sailing lessons as well. Taking up a new skill with your family can be a really fun bonding experience!
If you’d rather skip the sailing lessons, there are several places which offer private excursions around the island. You will have a personal guide to Mykonos, showing you all of the most beautiful places around the island.
Some excursions will let you sit back and relax sailing through the sea, or some will give you a bit of a history lesson.
Some excursions will even take you further out in the water and take you to visit the surrounding islands, such as the only boat-accessible island of Rina or the unlisted island of Delos. This is perfect for families with adventurous kids who love to explore.
Cruise Around the Island on an ATV or Rental Car
You could get around the island with a rental car or catching taxies everywhere, or you could rent ATVs to make your Greek adventure a bit more fun. There is an abundance of places where you can rent ATV’s around the island, so you’ll never run short.
However, this is more for teens – we don’t recommend doing this with smaller children as it can be really dangerous for them. But, the older kids in your family will love the chance to ride around on an ATV through a Greek island.
If you were looking for a lower-key way of getting around the island, you can rent a car. Most hotels or even airlines can hook you up with a rental car easily and possibly for a discounted price. However, going during peak tourist seasons, like the summertime, you will notice a spike in rental prices.
