Croatia is a popular destination for many European travelers, and is easily reachable by car if you have the patience for a long drive.
Driving to Croatia from most western european countries takes approximately 2 days depending on how many stops you do, and whether or not you stay the night somewhere along the way.
If your car has multiple capable drivers you can do the trip in 1 go if you take turns sleeping, but it is advised to spend at least 1 night somewhere to have the proper mindset for driving the long distance.
In this section we’ll give you a quick rundown of how to drive towards Croatia from the UK, but this list also applies to most other European countries, and you can simply skip the steps that are irrelevant to you, since you most likely live closer to Croatia if you’re not from the UK.
Here’s a quick guide on how to drive towards Croatia in short, from the UK:
- Start by driving down to Dover
- Take the ferry or tunnel across to Calais
- Head towards Belgium, staying in the direction towards Germany
- Once you enter Germany head down towards Frankfurt
- Head in the direction of the city of Nuremberg
- Once close head towards Regensburg towards Austria
- Drive into Austria near Linz
- Drive straight down across Austria towards Graz
- Now head into Slovenia and direct towards Maribor
- From there simply drive to Croatia and head towards Zagreb
Again, this list seems pretty short and simple, but keep in mind that most of these pointers are very long distances.
It takes a very long time to drive to Croatia, but if you and your family prefers to have your own vehicle and more items than you can take on a plane, driving is definitely worth it.
The drive itself is very easy, since almost all of it is on the freeway, meaning that you can drive rather fast all the way.
If you plan to rest somewhere along the way, you’ll most likely end up doing it somewhere in southern Germany, since this is the halfway point of the journey.
Remember to take care while driving on the German freeway, as their rules when regarding speed limits are quite mild.
Many parts of german freeways actually have no speed limit, which might seem crazy to foreigners, but is quite normal in Germany.
Another thing you should be aware of is the fact that the Croatian border can be quite busy if you travel in the peak summer season.
Try your best to avoid crossing the Croatian border during weekends, as this is the most busy time of the week in the summer seasons due to the large amount of tourists.
