Getting away this winter break meant sticking close to home. We chose to leave our cell phones and work interruptions at home and head from Chicago to Wisconsin.

Our destination: The Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort in Wisconsin Dells. The property is rated the #1 waterpark resort across the nation, by Waterpark Resort Today’s IT Book 2007-2008. We hoped this would be the place that would allow us a weekend where my 8-year old son would not say the dreaded words, “I’m bored.”

With four indoor waterparks providing fun for all ages and plenty of non-water activities, we hoped this would be the place we wouldn’t hear him complain for a couple of days.

We started out after work on a Friday evening and when we arrived, Wisconsin Dells was covered in fog, making it hard for us to realize how enormous the resort was until it cleared the following morning.

We were staying in the Glacier Canyon Lodge, a condominium resort recently built by the owners of the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort. Our room overlooked one of the three outdoor waterparks that were shut down for the winter. We could also see acres of beautiful wooded areas and more resorts. In addition to hotel rooms and condominiums, villas and cabins are also available to rent. While my husband and I were admiring the gorgeous view, our kids were already planning our agenda for the day.

It was at this point, we noticed the Hotel Room Energy Management System. This system utilizes door switches, infrared detectors and RF transmitters to control room temperature and cut energy costs. This eco-friendly system along with several other initiatives recently earned the resort the Governor’s Award for Energy Efficiency.

As we started to walk out of our room, my five-year old daughter took one last look outside where the snow had begun to fall. She could not understand why we were dressed in bathing suits and leaving our coats behind. My son quickly pulled out the map of the property and showed her that we did not have to step outside once the entire weekend. We could get to the main Wilderness resort via a fully enclosed walkway.

Our first stop was Klondike Kavern, a 65,000-square-foot indoor waterpark that offers:

  • the Hurricane, the Midwest’s tallest family raft ride
  • a 500-foot relaxing lazy river
  • two, three-story waterslides
  • the Sulfur Springs pool and hot spa with indoor-to-outdoor access
  • Bonanza Bluff, a family friendly play structure in the middle of the park.
