Paradise Island, Bahamas could not have been more perfectly named; it was just that - PARADISE!

My husband and I recently chose Atlantis on Paradise Island for a much-needed “parent getaway." We left our home in Chicago in the midst of a December snowstorm; the kids were even home on a "snow day" and we were happy to leave the treacherous conditions behind. Amazingly, our flight was on time and we made it to Atlantis in just a few short hours.

When we arrived, we were astonished at the enormity and beauty of everything. The attention to detail was incredible. We could instantly tell that everything including the art, tables, fragrances and even music were carefully chosen to enhance the visitor’s experience. The staff was friendly and helpful, often stopping what they were doing to check and see if they could assist us.

There were several resorts to choose from on Paradise Island – the Coral Tower, the Beach Tower, the Royal Tower, the Cove Atlantis, the Harborside Resort and the Reef Atlantis (which will be open by the end of December 2007). Our room was located in the Royal Tower and we had a spectacular view of the waterscape consisting of over 20 million gallons of fresh and saltwater lagoons, pools and habitats.

Leaving the kids was our big challenge. There were plenty of children there on a family vacation with their parents. In fact, it took a good 24 hours for us to realize they weren't with us! On the first day, we stepped into the elevator and stood there wondering why the elevator was not moving. We soon realized we had not pushed the button to take us to the lobby. Usually, my kids fight over pushing these buttons and I can honestly say this may have been the first elevator button I have touched in 8 years! .

We started each day with a trip to the fitness center, which my husband says was the most well-equipped weight-room he has ever seen at a resort. In addition to the weight room, the property offers plenty of cardio machines, spinning, yoga and Pilates classes, a 25-meter lap pool and fitness seminars. Atlantis definitely helps you indulge in that extra poolside pina colada – guilt-free!.
